Top 10
Marijuana and artists have always had a tight-knit relationship. We bring you a list of 10 history’s greatest stoner songs covering a wide range of tastes.
Marijuana has always been enjoyed by musicians and used as a source of musical creation so they’ve made some great songs to honour it. For all you stoners out there in need of some musical inspiration, we bring a top 10 list of stoner songs to get you in the mood for some reefer delight.
10. „Young, Wild and Free" (2011) - Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg feat. Bruno Mars
We start our top ten with representing the youngest of stoners with a modern, catchy tune that exudes some strong marijuana swag. The lyrics might not be Grammy material, nor are they supposed to be. It’s a light tune meant to capture the casual and relaxed feeling smoking has on us stoners. The catchy chorus is a courtesy of the gifted Bruno Mars and it his angelic voice, while Wiz and Snoop come in to tell you how they roll. After listening to this catchy tune you will certainly feel incited to roll one yourself, what more is there to ask of a stoner song?
9. “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” (1966) - Bob Dylan
Five smart and honest verses all about getting stoned were enough for Bob Dylan to create a cult classic. Filled with double meaning the song is both aimed at his critics and an ode to weed. It is the line “everybody must get stoned” that the song is remembered by, and how exactly was it taken back then is best seen in the words of an insightful Time Magazine critic: “In the shifting multi-level jargon of teenagers, 'to get stoned' does not mean to get drunk but to get high on drugs.” The story has it that Bob Dylan was making his band smoke before performances for complete authenticity. Blaze it.
P.S. There’s a 420 in the title, and that is before 420 was even a thing. Mind blown
8. “Burn One Down” (1995) - Ben Harper
This lovely pro-marijuana song is a sort of an anthem to American stoners and with it’s acoustic sounds remains to be a favourite at many stoners camp fires. One can only guess how many fatties were burned with Harper’s “Burn One Down” as a source of inspiration.
As we also find ourselves inspired we can’t help it but share some of this song beautiful wisdom:
“If you don't like my fire
Then don't come around
'Cause I'm gonna burn one down
Yes I'm gonna burn one, uh”
7. “Hits from the Bong” (1993) - Cypress Hill
“Hits from the Bong” is a stoner classic coming from the hit factory that goes by the name of Cypress Hill. The recognizable original beats will leave you with your head bobbing while at the same time you will be getting an invaluable lesson on how to get properly high. While most others on our top list advocate some well-made blunts Cypress Hill takes it to the next level and Hits The Bong!
6. “Because I Got High” (2001) - Afroman
Some may say that Afroman is singing about the pitfalls of excessive weed smoking, but the truth is he just got high! While the songwriting won’t win any awards the simple and relaxed lyrics and singing, paired with a touch of comedy, are highly relatable to many stoners and that explains why the song is on almost all stoner playlists. An added bonus to the famous song is the video that features two of the world’s best-known fictional stoners Jay and Silent BoB!
5. “You Don’t Know How It Feels” (1994) - Tom Petty
When you feel that you just want to roll another joint, there is no song more appropriate than the Tom Petty track “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. A song that, alongside Ben Harper’s “Burn One Down”, marked a generation of American stoners The opening harmonica is a sign for you to sit back, enjoy the high and cruise with Tom Petty as so many have done before. If that isn’t enough to put a smile on your face … Well … You are just not stoned enough!
4. “Sweet Leaf” (1971) - Black Sabbath
Now, “Sweet Leaf” is a stoner song with an attitude. Ozzy sure loves his leaf and it can be felt in this great 70’s stoners delight. One of the earliest weed anthems still remains a symbol of the rebellious flower children of the 70’s. A marvel of both guitar play and songwriting, “Sweet Leaf” will never leave you unaffected.
3. “Kaya” (1978) - Bob Marley
Our top 3 starts with none other than the weed icon himself. Ladies and gentlemen we present to you the famous Bob Marley. Just when u thought this top list is going to go without him. “Kaya” is a simple story of a man in need of a wake ‘n bake and as most Bob Marley songs it is filled with his instantly recognizable good vibes and simplicity. The love for the precious herb Kaya is apparent making it easy to relate for any serious stoner. This song will surely leave you feeling good about the love you have for Kaya and set you on your way, blazin’.
2. “Smoke Two Joints” (1992) - Sublime
While most songwriters are content to express their joy of a socially acceptable single joint, Sublime go all in with the second joint. To be fair the song was originally written and performed in 1983 by a reggae band, The Toyes. Sublime have gone through enough reefer session to know it never ends at one and has decided to pay tribute to the habit by covering The Toyes. With the lyrics: “I smoke two joints before I smoke two joints, and then I smoke two more”, the song will satisfy even for the most hardcore of potheads.
1. “Legalize It” (1976) - Peter Tosh
“Legalize it” is a great song with a cool vibe but what got it on our top spot is how timely the song was and still is. It addresses the biggest issue with marijuana, it’s legal status, and it wastes no time to do it as it starts with the powerful “Legalize it, don’t criticize it”. The song was written after Peter Tosh parted ways with Bob Marley and the Wailers, but in no way was it left in Bob Marley’s shadow. As a truly great advocate of the herb Peter Tosh uses the song to tell the world about all the people that actually use marijuana and about all the healing properties of it too. A truly valiant effort on breaking the marijuana taboo that all stoners will appreciate.
Enjoy the herb, enjoy the music.
